Llíria is a historic town 25 km northwest of Valencia, in Spain’s Valencian Community. It was Edeta, the Iberian capital of the Edetania region, then a Roman town and a medieval royal town, and since 2019 it has been a UNESCO Creative City of Music. This guide covers the essentials for a day trip or a weekend. (Versión en español.)
Getting there
- By metro: Llíria is the last stop of Metrovalencia line 2 (Llíria – Torrent Avinguda), which runs through central Valencia. Timetables and journey planner at metrovalencia.es.
- By car: about 25 km from Valencia on the CV-35 motorway. There are around 1,400 free parking spaces around the town centre (Pla de l’Arc, La Cultural, the station…): see where to park (in Spanish).
- Local buses: four town bus lines start at the metro station; a single ticket costs €0.65. See town bus.
What to see
- Sant Miquel Monastery and the Iberian town of Edeta — on top of Sant Miquel hill (271 m), with views over the whole Valencian plain to the sea. The monastery turns 700 in 2026 and had restoration works in the first half of the year; the statue of Saint Michael returned to the monastery on 1 October. Check visiting hours at the Tourist Info before going up.
- Church of the Blood (Iglesia de la Sangre) — probably Llíria’s most important monument, a jewel of its medieval heritage.
- Arab Baths — 12th-century baths of about 400 m², originally outside the town walls.
- Roman mausoleums — two joined Roman funerary monuments beside an ancient road into the town.
- Ca la Vila — the 16th-century Renaissance town hall on the Plaça Major; nearby, the Molló del Pla de l’Arc, a pillar of a 1st-century Roman arch.
- Hercules mosaic — the famous Roman mosaic of the Twelve Labours of Hercules was found in Llíria in 1917 (the original is in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid); since 2021 a full-size replica can be seen where it was found, at Ca Porcar.
- Museums — the Silvestre de Edeta Museum (sculptor Manuel Silvestre, in the 14th-century Gothic Ca la Vila Vella), the Archaeological Museum (MALL) and the Roman sanctuary and baths of Mura, which got a new protective roof in October 2026. In October 2026 the two museums were temporarily closed and Mura had no published visiting hours yet: check with the Tourist Info before you go.
Nature and walks
Just 2.5 km from the centre, the Sant Vicent park has a spring, a hermitage, century-old trees and picnic areas; in Roman times there was a temple to the nymphs here. Llíria also has five waymarked hiking trails, from the easy Senda dels Tossals (6.5 km, 2 h, starting at the Plaça Major) to long routes through La Concòrdia, in the Sierra Calderona natural park. Details (in Spanish): routes in Llíria.
The city of music
Llíria has two large music societies, each with a band, a music school and hundreds of musicians: the Banda Primitiva (“El Clarín”, founded in 1819, Spain’s oldest civil band) and the Unió Musical. Two yearly festivals: eMe – Early Music of Edeta (around 21 March) and DesenJazz (around 30 April). Concerts are listed in the events calendar.
Festivals
The main festival is the Fair and Festival of Sant Miquel (second half of September; procession on 29 September). Others: Sant Antoni (January), Fallas (March), Holy Week, Sant Vicent (spring) and the Purísima and Remedio festivals (late August and early September), with fireworks, parades, Moors and Christians and bull runs. See festivals calendar (in Spanish).
Food
Try sambarot (a local vegetable dish), arròs amb fesols i naps (rice with beans and turnips), congrets and the sweet “besos de novia”. The municipal market on Plaça Major opens Monday to Saturday, 8:00–14:00.
